Women’s sexual fantasies rarely match what a couple does every week. In the head there can be sex in an office, a threesome, a celebrity, or a plot the person would not agree to repeat in life. A study in The Journal of Sexual Medicine shows which sexual fantasies come up more often.
The most sexual fantasies do not have to be soft. A romantic setting appears often in women’s plots. Next to it sit sharper scenes: public sex, power, a stranger. Coercion, if it is there, stays a plot in the head, not a plan for the evening.
Below is not a list of what you should try. It is a list of sexual fantasies that girls and women name most often in surveys, and how those plots differ from sex in reality.
Women’s sexual fantasies: what comes up more often
Sexual fantasies are scenes in the head. They are not equal to a plan for the evening and not equal to consent in bed. A woman can picture a hard plot and still want only calm sex with a partner in life. The list below shows which plots are named more often. It is not a list of what must be acted out.
In the study a romantic setting appears in almost every fantasy. After that come specific acts. For girls and for women in long relationships the set is often similar. The difference is not age. It is whom the woman puts in the scene: a new person, a husband, someone she knows, or a star.
How a girl’s fantasies differ from a wife’s fantasies
Something else changes. Picturing a colleague or a stranger is still possible. But if that scene is repeated with a colleague or a stranger and the husband is not told, that is no longer a fantasy. That is an act.
A wife’s sexual fantasies do not reduce to sex with her husband in a new pose. In surveys married women name the same themes as single girls: a public place, a threesome, a scene where she is directed. That does not mean the marriage is bad. It means a fantasy can stay in the head, and only what both agree to goes into bed.
1. Sex in a public place
The tension here is not the place itself, but the risk that someone will see. 57.3% of women fantasize about public sex. A specific spot — office, toilet, car — already appears for 81.7%. For girls’ sexual fantasies this is often “just don’t get caught.” For a wife in the same scene another ban can be added: “they must not recognize us.”
2. A threesome
56.5% of women fantasize about a threesome. In the head there are more bodies and more attention than in an ordinary couple. More often this fantasy has two women, not two men: about 37% picture a trio of women only, about 31% a scene with two men. What matters in this fantasy is not adding just anyone. What matters is that there is more attention and touch than in sex as a pair.
3. Being on top and leading
Almost 47% of women in fantasy themselves take slaps, orders, and the right to tell the partner what to do. Almost 47% of women in fantasy themselves give orders, spank, and decide what happens next. Pain is not what arouses. What arouses is that the man obeys.
Pain may be there or not. What holds it is something else: she sets the pace, and his body follows. For some wives this plot sounds especially sharp at home, where the whole day is spent negotiating. In the fantasy there is no need to negotiate. One move is enough — and the partner does as told.
4. Being led
The other side of the same desire. 64.6% of women picture the partner taking control. Books and films such as Fifty Shades of Grey made this fantasy more visible. But it did not appear because of them. In ordinary life a woman often decides everything herself. In fantasy she can let that go for a while and give the move to someone else. That is what arouses.
5. Sex with a celebrity
51.7% of women let an actor, a singer, or another known figure into the fantasy. In the head the person briefly becomes someone desired apart from daily life. A celebrity in fantasy does not need to be invented. Face, voice, and desire toward them are already there. Only the scene remains. This fantasy does not rest on the star being better than a husband. In the head they have no shared daily life: no need to decide who picks up the child and what is for dinner. Only desire remains.
6. Sex with a stranger
Almost half of women picture sex with a person they do not know. In one version she takes him home — and that happens only in the head. In another, sex happens at once where they met. In both versions there is no shared daily life and no aftermath. Only the sex itself remains.
7. Bondage
A little over 50% of women picture being tied. This is no longer abstract control, but concrete helplessness: hands are occupied, someone else sets the pace. For some, bondage is a piece of the same fantasy where she is directed. For others, bondage stands on its own. They do not need the whole story about power. They need only a concrete detail: the person cannot move their hands away.
8. Sex with a woman
About 37% of women fantasize about sex with a woman, including those who in life consider themselves heterosexual. Explanations often mention another quality of touch: softer, closer, without a male script. Girls’ sexual fantasies on this theme do not make them “hidden lesbians.” A plot in the head and orientation in life are different levels.
9. Sex with someone known, but not the partner
66% of women picture in bed someone they know: a neighbor, a friend, a colleague, a courier. A wife’s sexual fantasies are most slippery here in meaning: the person already exists in ordinary life, but not in sex. That is not automatically a plan to cheat. Often it is curiosity and the tension of a body that is other, but not random.
10. Sex under coercion
About 30% of women picture a scene where a man tears clothes off and takes the initiative hard, without her explicit “yes” inside the fantasy. This is not a wish to be raped. Sexual fantasies and sex in reality must not be mixed here. In the head the person starts the scene herself and can stop it herself. In life sex without consent remains violence.
If such a plot exists, that does not make a woman “broken.” It means only a scene in the head. Any hard script in bed is possible only with clear consent from both.
Short version
Women’s sexual fantasies most often are not equal to what they want to repeat this evening.
The most sexual fantasies in the survey are public, a trio, power, a celebrity, a stranger, bondage.
Girls’ sexual fantasies and a wife’s sexual fantasies are often about the same scenes. What changes is the cost if they leave the head for life.
Sexual fantasies and sex meet only where both said “yes.”
A fantasy of coercion is not equal to a request for violence.
Women’s sexual fantasies prove nothing about “correct” sex. They show which plots the brain turns on more often. Some can stay in the head. Some can be talked through with a partner. No scene from the list becomes mandatory only because it landed in a top.
FAQ
If a wife has another man in her head, is that already cheating?
No. Cheating is an act and your agreements as a couple. A picture in the head does not become cheating by itself.
Why do a girl and a wife often have the same fantasies?
Desire does not rebuild from scratch with age. School, marriage, children, fatigue change. The plots can stay the same.
Should you ask her to tell all her fantasies?
No. It makes sense to ask about what she herself is ready to bring into bed. The rest can stay hers.
If she pictures coercion, does that mean she wants that in life?
No. In the fantasy she starts and stops the scene herself. In life there is no such sex without her clear consent.
Should you repeat with her whatever sits in the top of fantasies?
No, not necessarily. First you ask whether she wants that scene in reality. The top shows what women often picture. It does not show that your partner wants to do it with you today.
Why does she watch lesbian porn if she sleeps with a man?
Because fantasy and orientation are different things. A woman can picture sex with a woman and still choose a man in life.
If she fantasizes about a celebrity or a colleague, am I not enough?
That does not follow. In the head the celebrity and the colleague have no shared daily life with her. You do. The fantasy is often about desire without everyday life, not about replacing a partner.
